Ceramics

In Imperfect Reflections, each ceramic piece embraces spontaneity and the idea of letting go, releasing the tight grip on perfection. Each irregularity, asymmetry and unexpected nuance are not flaws, but a celebration of beauty found in the raw and unrefined. It is a reminder to revel in the joy of creating without restraint and allowing imperfections to take centre stage. However, amidst this pursuit, I was still unconsciously pulled towards perfection and the yearn to achieve refinement, highlighting the paradoxical nature of artistic expression and the tension between intention and outcome.

About My Art

What’s the purpose or goal of your work?
Entering the world of public exhibitions is daunting for me, hindered by my belief that my
lack of formal art training somehow disqualifies my work. As an educator, I recognize the
familiar struggle in students who grapple with self-doubt and the pressure to meet
perceived standards. By embracing this opportunity to showcase my developing skills in
a new medium, I wish to inspire others to allow themselves the space to stumble and
learn, and embrace mistakes as opportunities to grow.
With each flawed vessel, is a reminder that progress happens when we step out of our
comfort zones and keep trying new things. Art is not about perfection, but the courage to
explore and evolve.

Why did you choose this medium?
Clay fascinates me, I love the feel of it in my hands and its unpredictable quality as it
transforms from clay to ceramics. When I’m at the pottery wheel, the world fades into the
background, leaving only the rhythmic hum of creation. There’s a groundedness in
working with a medium sourced from the earth.

About My Views

How can your artmaking affect your role as a teacher?
This journey from conceptualization to execution has been an enlightening experience. It
has underscored the importance of being open to feedback from others and
understanding the challenges inherent in acquiring new skills to build empathy when
teaching in the classroom.
By immersing myself in this process, I aspire to craft authentic learning experiences for
my students and guide them through the complexities of artistic expression.
