Watercolour

Elnie Tryana Dridi
Telok Kurau Primary School

Blossoms of Nostalgia is an endeavour to delicately capture memories of my previous school, reflected in my chosen medium of watercolour. With every stroke of the brush, I aim not only to depict the transient beauty of flowers but also to evoke the fleeting essence of those cherished moments. Just as flowers bloom in the past, memories too unfold and blossom in the garden of our reminiscences.

A Little Bit About Elnie

I’ve always been curious about Art. I want to learn as many art forms as possible. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if one could do simple doodling to the grand sculptures that captivate every passerby? The first question that comes to my mind every time I see an artwork is: How did he/she do that?
Over the years, I have taken the time to take up courses- sometimes in the evening, other times during the school holidays to satisfy my need to learn more about the different kinds of art.
I want to create things because it gives me so much joy. Now, I paint with watercolours. Personally, I find it the most difficult medium to work with. I enjoy the challenge that watercolour presents. Even if the painting doesn’t turn out the way I want it to be, I think it is okay. I just pick up my brushes and do another one. I can take more than a week to produce a painting that I am satisfied with.
I mostly paint at home. I don’t enjoy outdoor painting as I find it stressful. The heat, the people around me and the exhaustion don’t quite add to a good artwork. At home, I paint and watch television in between the stages of the painting.
For inspiration, I mainly look for photos on sites like Unsplash, which are not copyrighted. I paint anything from flowers to food to animals. I hope to paint people as my subject once I am more confident and my painting skills are better.
I would like to have a network of friends who come together once a week to paint. I think it would be great.

About my Art

I started painting the flowers last year just before we had to vacate the grounds of Eunos Primary School due to the merger. I was, like many other teachers, melancholic. Painting the flowers in and around the school was my way to say goodbye to the wonderful organisation that I was in.
I chose to paint with watercolour because I am trying to hone my skills. Not only do I get to practice my painting skills, I get to remember the great school my way.

My View

Art is very important. Whether people realise it or not, Art plays a role in our everyday lives. The things we see, hear and feel are all related to Art. What is life without Art?
