Possible Guiding Questions For Discussing Art

Possible Lesson Ideas For Making Art

How do artists draw inspiration from their surroundings?

By the end of this lesson, students will be become aware of various ways to observe, alter and use inspiration from their surroundings in their art making.  Students will refer to the book “Souvenirs from Singapore” by Supermama Books, to select one object that has significance to their daily lives for discussion. Drawing from the theme of ‘Here”, students have to manipulate a selected object into an A3 composition drawing & painting by including imagery from their everyday environment.

  1. What do you see in the artwork? How are the elements in the painting arranged?
  2. What colors are used in the artwork?
  3. What is the artist trying to convey? What made you say that?

From the book “Souvenirs from Singapore”, select some objects which may have some symbolic significance and talk about them with the class.

For example:

  1. The cane (Pg. 97): Talk about how this object’s function has changed, and what symbolic meaning this object could have.

  1. Tiffin Carrier (Pg. 66): Ask if this object is commonplace right how, and what symbols/metaphors could this object possibly convey.
A separate art discussion on illustration styles and approaches should take place before this lesson

Elegant art task:

  • Create an A3 drawing/painting inspired by one everyday object, and one colloquial phrase, in relation to the trigger word “Here”.
