This interdisciplinary artwork is a collaborative exploration by a group of art and music teachers, driven by a shared curiosity about the relationship between visual art and music as modes of storytelling and connection. By weaving visual and sonic languages together, the work considers how both art forms can move beyond individual expression to generate shared meaning through collective experience.

The project began with hands-on experimentation into sound vibrations and their visual responses, before expanding into an investigation of music-making mechanisms—where sound, motion, and material interact. These explorations gradually evolved into an abstract visual language: symbols distilled from individual artworks and assembled into a graphic notation.

Functioning as an open-ended score, the notation invites interpretation rather than prescribing outcomes. Viewers are encouraged to participate and perform, becoming co-creators of the work. Embedded within the notation is a melody — familiar yet incomplete — that can only be realised through collective listening, interpretation, and collaboration. The song speaks of unity and identity, reflecting the belief that connection, like art and music, is most powerful when created together.

What surprised you when you allowed yourself to start with play?

When we started with play, we discovered the joy in exploring tools and symbols in unexpected ways. Each of us interprets things differently, and sharing these perspectives lets us experience play from new angles. Playing alone is enjoyable but playing together brings the real magic.

What is one play hack you would like to share to help fellow teacher-artists experiment and create without expectations?

One play hack we’d like to share is to stay open-minded, dream big, think silly, and approach every result with curiosity. Don’t be afraid to scrap or reshape an idea, even if it feels settled. Sometimes holding on too tightly to the first idea can make you miss the ten more waiting just ahead!
