PLAY-macy is an interactive installation that turns the idea of medicine into a playful ritual. Instead of the usual sterile pharmacy, the work offers a booth filled with bright “pills” made from soft, bouncy clay. This colorful setting invites visitors to see healing not as a rigid process, but as something joyful and imaginative.

The installation explores the everyday attachments—whether people, routines, or objects—that help us get through life. Rather than treating these connections with clinical seriousness, PLAY-macy approaches them with humor and creativity. Visitors are encouraged to meet the “pharmacist,” fill out a prescription card, and receive a personalized dose of color, transforming a familiar medical routine into a moment of play.

By mixing the look of healthcare with the energy of a playground, PLAY-macy asks us to rethink what care can mean. It suggests that joy, ritual, and shared experience can be just as restorative as medicine. In this way, the installation highlights play not as something trivial, but as a powerful tool for healing and community.

What surprised you when you allowed yourself to start with play?

When I started with play, I discovered that there’s really no right, or wrong way to create art. We should be more kind to ourselves and to students when making “mistakes”..

What is one play hack you would like to share to help fellow teacher-artists experiment and create without expectations?

One play hack I would like to share is to go to toys stores (e.g. Toys”R”Us/ Game shops) and reminisce on the different toys or games that excites you when you were a kid!
