Mixed Media, 2021
Srividya Nair

The artwork is inspired by humanity’s desire to fight and depart from this current pandemic situation which reflects where we want to go from here.
The work consists of drawings using the cross-hatching art technique representing the many ‘X’ that is marked and forms the imagery of prominent representations of ‘covid-19’ in the media. These images are animated in a video with a fade in and out effect projected onto the painted canvas and the fading out represents the departure from the situation.
The background canvas is a painting of water lilies inspired by Claude Monet’s artwork. The water lilies are known to represent hope, rebirth, wellness, peace and spiritual connection. Just like how the artist found calm amongst his own surroundings, the world will find peace when the pandemic is over.

Srividya’s artworks are usually driven by her interest in humanity and circumstances which affect them. As the world is in the midst of a Covid-19 pandemic, this will be the main focus of her work. She likes to explore mixed media in her art and as such, she takes an interdisciplinary approach experimenting with drawing, painting and projection.
In this artwork, she portrays the common desire for humanity to depart from this pandemic suggesting that this too shall pass. She firmly believes that one day, humanity will arrive at a time where peace will prevail, but in a changed world.
