Graphite on paper, 2022

Bus rides to and from school have always been moments of respite for me; either the calm before a chaotic day, or the sigh of relief from an exhausting one. My seat on the bus seems like a space of my own, yet it is also a communal one. I peer at others from the corner of my eye: a child looking excitedly out the window, a tired student slumped in his seat, a middle-aged lady on her way home from buying groceries. The overlapping of my own internal headspace (inner space – depth) is momentarily interrupted by the environment around me (extended space – width) – the ringing of someone’s phone, the beeping of ez-link cards, the laughter of secondary school students, as my internal musings intermingle with external observations.
